Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal, El Hassan Science City (EHSC) hosted a high-level academic delegation from Lappeenranta–Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Finland, as part of a two-day visit aimed at strengthening Jordanian–Finnish cooperation in higher education, scientific research, technology, and innovation.
The visit brought together senior leadership and representatives from LUT with institutions across El Hassan Science City, including the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT), and iPark, reflecting an integrated innovation ecosystem spanning education, applied research, innovation, and technology-driven entrepreneurship.
His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal met with the Finnish delegation in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of PSUT, and Professor Wejdan Abu Elhaija, President of PSUT, at the university’s campus. Discussions focused on building specialised academic and research partnerships between Jordan and Finland, with particular emphasis on technology, entrepreneurship, and applied research that translates knowledge into practical solutions addressing contemporary development challenges.
The visit builds on a previous meeting between His Royal Highness and representatives of LUT during his recent visit to Finland, where he was briefed on Finland’s experience in technological higher education. During the discussions, His Royal Highness emphasised the importance of engaging young people through modern, interactive educational approaches and reaffirmed confidence in youth as key drivers of future progress.
His Royal Highness highlighted the need to advance education in Jordan, particularly in technological disciplines and entrepreneurship, noting their cross-cutting impact on critical sectors such as water and energy. He underscored the concept of “intra- independence” as a foundation for true sovereignty, grounded in empowering people through knowledge, building national capacities, and strengthening self-reliance in knowledge production and decision-making.
His Royal Highness further stressed that human dignity lies at the heart of any successful educational or development endeavour, affirming that investment in people and safeguarding the right to education and knowledge are essential to achieving social justice, stability, and sustainable development.
For her part, Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan expressed pride in hosting the Finnish delegation at PSUT, the academic arm of El Hassan Science City. She emphasised the importance of academic dialogue and the exchange of ideas as the cornerstone of effective and sustainable international cooperation, aligned with the vision of El Hassan Science City established more than five decades ago to place science, applied research, and knowledge at the centre of national development.
Her Royal Highness noted that the continued guidance and engagement of His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan ensure the continuity of this vision, rooted in human dignity, responsibility, and service to society. She also remarked that His Royal Highness’s recent visit to Finland offered an opportunity to reflect on shared values and learn from a country that has consistently invested in education, research, and long-term thinking.
Professor Wejdan Abu Elhaija, President of PSUT, presented the university’s journey and achievements at both national and international levels, highlighting advancements in academic programmes through pioneering specialisations in computer science, engineering, and business technology.
The Rector of LUT, Professor Juha-Matti Saksa, delivered a presentation on the university’s experience and areas of excellence in education, scientific research, and industry collaboration, including work related to agriculture, water, and seed technologies. The visiting delegation also reviewed a range of innovation laboratory projects developed by PSUT students and faculty across computing, engineering, and business technology disciplines.
On the second day, a strategic dialogue session was held at the Royal Scientific Society, chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, focusing on education, scientific research, and industry. The session was attended by H.E. Professor Azmi Mahafzah, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, university presidents, and senior academic and sector stakeholders.
The visit concluded with tours of the Royal Scientific Society’s facilities, including the National Metrology Centre and automated chemistry laboratories, as well as field visits to the Islamic Network on Water Resources Development and Management (INWRDAM) and the National Agricultural Research Centre’s Seed Bank.
