Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) hosted the Jordanian scientist Dr. Omar Hattamleh, Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Hattamleh delivered a lecture entitled “Transforming the Future,” attended by PSUT President Prof. Wejdan Abu Elhaija, members of the Council of Deans, faculty members, and students.
During his lecture, Dr. Hattamleh stated that artificial intelligence has become a comprehensive force reshaping various aspects of human life, including education, the economy, medicine, and the labor market, leading to a fundamental transformation in its applications and societal impact. He emphasized that the medical sector is among the most significant beneficiaries, particularly in the areas of early diagnosis, supporting physicians with the latest medical research, and improving the efficiency of healthcare systems.
He also reviewed the ethical challenges associated with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies, noting that these challenges are increasingly complex and necessitate the establishment of ethical frameworks based on transparency, fairness, privacy protection, and respect for human rights.
Dr. Hattamleh further explained that in an era dominated by artificial intelligence tools, it is essential to strengthen adaptability skills, critical thinking, and the capacity for lifelong learning.
On the sidelines of the lecture, a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Siren Atiani was held, addressing several key themes, most notably artificial intelligence and emerging technological research at NASA, the need for a radical shift in patterns of thinking, and the importance of intellectual capabilities in a rapidly changing world.
During the discussion, Dr. Hattamleh presented ideas that could enable Jordan to establish a distinctive position in the artificial intelligence–driven technology market, guiding students toward entrepreneurial project ideas and startup initiatives with genuine prospects for success in the AI sector.
PSUT students also discussed the challenge of balancing the development of artificial intelligence technologies with the preservation of individual privacy and autonomy, as well as ways to benefit from technological advancement without falling into total dependence on it.
At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Dr. Wejdan Abu Elhaija presented Dr. Hattamleh with the University Shield in recognition of his scientific contributions and efforts.
