14th Model United Nations Conference Held at Princess Sumaya University for Technology

The President of Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Prof. Wejdan Abu Elhaija, inaugurated the 14th Model United Nations Conference 2025, titled “Mastering Limitations.” The event was attended by Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Eng. Sami Smeirat, University Vice President Prof. Bassam Hammo, and several university officials, with 270 students from various Jordanian universities and schools participating.

Prof. Wejdan Abu Elhaija stated at the opening ceremony that Princess Sumaya University for Technology promotes the values of excellence, innovation, and leadership while fostering understanding, cooperation, and international diplomacy. She drew inspiration from His Majesty King Abdullah II’s words: “Together we can create a world where peace is real… a world where every person can thrive… a world where everyone shares in the promise of this century.” She added that the event brings together not just students but future visionaries, diplomats, and change-makers who have the courage to face challenges and the passion to drive real change.

She highlighted that the conference continues to serve as a platform for diplomacy and a testament to the vision of ambitious young people who believe in dialogue, cooperation, and teamwork.

Prof. Abu Elhaija noted that this year’s theme, “Mastering Challenges,” is especially relevant in today’s rapidly changing world. While political instability, economic disparity, environmental crises, and technological disruptions pose significant challenges, history has shown that great leaders emerge not despite adversity but because of it.

She emphasized that the conference is more than policy discussions and decision-making; it is a space for understanding different perspectives, embracing cultural diversity, and promoting unity in a divided world. It is about mastering negotiation, harnessing the power of diplomacy, and valuing the wisdom of compromise.

H.E. Eng. Sami Smeirat emphasized that the exceptional environment at Princess Sumaya University for Technology empowers students to innovate and achieve global success. He encouraged them to stay motivated, calling them drivers of change and highlighting Jordanian youth’s role in advancing development locally and globally as the world undergoes digital transformation.

Dr. Rami Salem, Dean of Student Affairs, expressed pride in the university’s Model United Nations Club members, who have organized this conference with enthusiasm and dedication for 14 years.

Over the three-day conference, sessions will cover various topics, including the General Assembly, the Human Rights Committee’s role in protecting journalists, the balance between the UN’s role in state sovereignty and human rights protection, integrating human rights into governments transitioning from dictatorship to democracy, the outcomes of the United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH), the International Criminal Court, women at work initiative under the International Labor Organization, and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

A video was also shown highlighting the achievements of the university’s Model United Nations Club over the years, showcasing students’ excellence in presentation and negotiation.

At the end of the ceremony, University President Prof. Abu Elhaija honored Eng. Smeirat and several former club presidents.
