The Debate and Thought Club at Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) won the second place in the 2nd Asian Arabic Debating Championship 2023, in the competition that was held in Muscat, the capital of Oman, with the participation of 42 teams representing 42 universities from different Asian countries. The competition was organized by Qatar Debate Center, and sponsored by His Highness Fahr bin Fatik Al Said.

The Arab teams of non-native speakers and the Arabic-speaking teams competed in several rounds. The final round was between the Texas E&M University-Qatar team and Princess Sumaya University for Technology team which qualified after defeating the Carnegie Mellon University-Qatar team.

The winning team included PSUT students Hamza Daoud, Hind Nasser, Sana Murad, and Rola Al-Ahmad who won the sixth best speaker in the championship.

PSUT President, Prof. Wejdan Abu Elhaija, congratulated the team for winning one of the strongest Arabic Debate competitions.

Prof. Abu Elhaija was also proud of PSUT distinguished students for the achievements they made at all levels especially in the extracurricular activities in various local and international events. This assures that the university is keen to support student clubs which contribute to refining students’ skills, expanding their knowledge, and encouraging them to participate in decision-making.

On his part, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Rami Salem, praised the club members and Ms. Manar Al-Shraideh, the person in charge of the Student Clubs and Cultural Activity Office. He also appreciated the efforts of everyone who had a role in making this achievement that emphasizes the distinction of PSUT.

It is worth noting that the Debate and Thought Club was established in 2016 to build sound thought and to train students on debate standards. The constituent body of the club consisted of 40 students from various majors with the aim of forming a Jordanian youth platform that is concerned with enhancing conscious and empowered Jordanian youth through a wide range of specialized activities and events.

The Thought and Debate Club was crowned champion of the first Asian Championship for Debates in Arabic in 2019, which was held in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, and was organized by the International Islamic University of Malaysia, with the participation of 100 contestants representing 20 international universities.
