The ARC Robotics Club at Princess Sumaya University for Technology has won the Portal:FireFighting Competition, which was organized by IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) at the University of Jordan and held in collaboration with all IEEE RAS university branches. Twenty teams from six universities took part in the event.
The members of the winning team were Jood Barakat, Hatem Al-Sayegh and Farida Barakat. Third place went to the team consisting of Amer Jarrar, Yahya Abidou and Hamza Daoud. Both teams were under the supervision of Dr. Aws Kanaan and Eng. Mahmoud Faris of the King Abdullah II School of Engineering.
PSUT’s President, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai congratulated the winning teams and expressed his pride and pleasure in this achievement, which is a great honor for Jordanian university students. He praised the efforts of the students and supervisors for their continuous efforts to participate in national and international competitions that support their academic careers and serve to hone their practical skills. These events also give students the opportunity to showcase their excellent abilities and enhance a spirit of cooperation, teamwork and honest competition among colleagues. Prof. Al-Refai highlighted that this achievement serves to fulfill the aspirations of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees.
Notably, the Robotics Club was only founded at PSUT six months ago. The University’s participating teams worked to build the three robots with mastery and a high level of manual skill. It is also noteworthy that the Portal: FireFighting Competition aims to build a robot that simulates the process of extinguishing fires and carrying out the evacuation of property and persons in a safe manner.
