A Jordanian team from Princess Sumaya University of Technology and Yarmouk University won first place in the world in the Huawei ICT Skills Competition 2020, which was held via visual communication technology at the company’s headquarters in China, with the participation of 327 students forming 109 teams representing 39 countries.
The winning team consisted of PSUT students Zaid Afaneh and Muhammad Abu Shukr from the King Abdullah II School of Engineering, and Mansour Al-Hamoud from Yarmouk University, under the supervision of Engineer Ashraf Sabha from PSUT.
HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, congratulated the winning students and their supervisor for their honorable achievement that confirms their excellence and leadership. Her Highness affirmed that the University would continue to provide all forms of support to students to promote their participation in various international competitions.
PSUT President, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai, praised the winners and their efforts to actively participate in competitions that hone their skills and open broad horizons for the development and improvement of their performance and capabilities. He also thanked Huawei in Jordan for its constant communication and efforts to establish a Huawei Academy at the University.
The Dean of the School, Dr. Belal Sababha, pointed out that the competition included theoretical and laboratory examinations, and that the participants were students in Huawei ICT academies and higher education institutions who have joined the Huawei ICT Academy program all over the world.
Eng. Ashraf Sabha explained that the competition came in two tracks: networks and cloud computing, with the aim of assessing students' capabilities in information and communication technology, practical skills and teamwork using the Internet of Things, big data and artificial intelligence.
Notably, PSUT won the second and third places in the Crown Prince Award for Best Government Services Application 2020, and a few weeks ago it won first place in the world in the IEEEXtreme Programming Competition. Previously, the University won first place in the Middle East and Africa in the ACM Global Programming Competition 2018. Regarding the Huawei competition, PSUT has twice taken first place in the national heats, and has come third at the regional level three times.
