A team of Jordanian students from Princess Sumaya University for Technology and Yarmouk University won third place in the world in the 2019 International Huawei ICT Skills Competition which was held in China in late November. The team was coached by PSUT’s Engineer Ashraf Sabha, who won Outstanding Coach Award. PSUT was also honored as a distinguished academic institution. In attendance at the event was the Jordanian Ambassador in Beijing, Mr. Hussam Al-Husseini.
The Jordanian team comprised of Zaid Afaneh and Mohammed Abu Shukr, both students at PSUT, and Mansour Al-Hamoud from Yarmouk University. Approximately 21,000 students from 437 universities in the Middle East and Pakistan took part in the various stages of the competition.
PSUT’s President, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai, congratulated the two winners and their coach on their great achievement. He praised the efforts of the students for their continuous efforts in participating in competitions that support their academic careers and serve to hone their practical skills. He also thanked the students and their universities for representing Jordan, as well as all those who coached them and contributed to this honorable achievement. Prof. Al-Refai pointed out that the Huawei competition gives competitors a unique experience in mastering ICT, computer networks, industrial intelligence, network security, and cloud computing, stressing that the participation of Jordanian universities alongside international universities is evidence of the quality of education in Jordan and how it has improved.
Prof. Al-Refai praised the great role of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of PSUT's Board of Trustees, and her directives to support students in achieving leadership and excellence at the local and international levels, as well as motivating them to enrich their skills by constantly participating in national and international activities, events and competitions, especially in the IT field.
Notably, PSUT has taken first place in the national level of the competition on two previous occasions. Jordanian teams have reached the finals three times, with students from the University appearing in the Jordanian team every time. PSUT teams have taken third place in the region, in addition to achieving first and third place in the local round of the competition earlier in November.
