PSUT hosts TEDx Conference

Wednesday, March 4, 2020 - 12:00

Acting on behalf of the President of Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Prof. Ghaith Rabadi, the University’s Vice President for Research and Development, inaugurated the activities of the TEDx-PSUT Conference. The event follows the concept of the world-famous TED Talks that seeks to achieve the principle of "ideas worth spreading" in communities around the world.

In a speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the conference, which was organized by the Deanship of Student Affairs, Al-Rabadi welcomed the attendees, participants and sponsors, expressing his pleasure and pride in PSUT’s hosting of this conference and the presence of this distinguished constellation of stars who show promise of being role models in society.

Prof. Al-Rabadi emphasized the importance of the TED program in motivating Jordanian youth to tirelessly pursue their dreams and aspirations. The conference is dedicated to young people, and aims to prompt their inspired ideas, expand their knowledge, and enhance their creativity in a wide range of fields, ultimately transferring their ideas and experiences to future generations.

Al-Rabadi went on to point out that PSUT had provided the students with everything that was needed to make this event a success, noting that the University administration lends its support to extracurricular activities that improve and hone students’ talents and skills, by backing student clubs in particular and all PSUT students in general.  He highlighted the fact that this approach reflects the visions of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of PSUT’s Board of Trustees, of refining students’ skills, broadening their knowledge horizons, and encouraging them to be creative. These directives aim to create a generation of fully aware young people who understand what they want and are ready to contribute in decision-making in societal issues.

The conference was supervised by a number of students, led by Software Engineering student Fadia Mubarak. Eleven speakers gave their talks on various topics including cyber security, medicine, pharmacy, travel and education, books, art, artificial intelligence, healthy relationships, life design, motivation, and cooking.

It is noteworthy that the selection of speakers was made by a special committee from the team of organizing students. The committee met with applicants over a period of months to ensure that all TEDx conditions were fulfilled by each speaker. The topics will be broadcast on the TEDx YouTube channel, which has a following of 15 million viewers.

At the close of the conference, Dr. Rami Salem honored the participants and sponsors, presenting them with shields in thanks for their contribution to the event’s success. The conference is a locally organized event that brings people together and draws upon the global TEDx experience. The TEDx program consists of two main parts, namely, the speakers, followed by a presentation of one of TED's international videos. TEDx International provides the key working guidelines for anyone who wishes to organize a TEDx event. It is worth noting that TED is an acronym of the words technology, entertainment and design. TED Talks is a series of international conferences aimed at introducing and disseminating new and distinguished ideas for the world. It is backed by the Sapling Foundation, a not for profit corporation in the USA.
