The President of Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai, presided over the opening of the Third National Conference 3rd National Conference on "PSUT Students Skills and Employability" which was held at PSUT for the third consecutive year. Attending the event were the president of the HEAC, Dr. Bashir al-Zu'bi, and the Director General of Petra News Agency, Dr. Mohammed Al-Amri. More than 123 companies from both the public and private sectors, and trade unions, participated in the activities of "Career Guidance Week" which was organized by the Deanship of Admissions and Registration and the Office for Careers Guidance and Alumni Affairs. The 5-day event aims to provide job opportunities for PSUT graduates, give students the chance to enter training programs, particularly during the summer, and to teach students how to make effective job applications. It also serves to strengthen ties between the University and employers, seeking to meet their demands regarding experience and skills.
Opening the conference, Prof. Al-Refa'i welcomed the attendees and emphasized the University's determination, since its inception, to offer unique specializations, and to reach a high standard in both teaching methods and scientific research with a view to producing exceptional graduates who meet the demands of the local labor market. He pointed out that the University's adoption of such conferences that seek to tune into the needs of the labor market is surely an embodiment of PSUT’s mission and vision, which is the graduation of outstanding students and fully qualified, both academically and practically, to serve and enrich the market, and promote scientific research in computing sciences, engineering, and business technology in order to serve the knowledge society in Jordan and the region. Prof. Al-Refa'i expressed his pleasure and pride in PSUT’s being the conference organizer for the third consecutive year, seeing it as an excellent initiative on the part of the University to align its programs with the needs of the labor market, aided by such extensive participation from so many companies.
Prof. Al-Refai noted that this conference showcases the achievements of PSUT graduates in the labor market, highlighting the outstanding success many have found in the field of business. Among the events associated with the conference are the Careers Fair and the Exhibition of Graduation Projects. The events form a great experience for PSUT, where students can learn many new skills to hone their creativity, and guide them on the right career path.
Prof. Al-Refai noted that the University has made great progress along the path of leadership and excellence, and has gained a proud reputation, giving it a high status among Jordanian universities, as well as a prestigious position among international universities. He added that these achievements could only have been made thanks to the support and guidance of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, who pays the University great attention and works tirelessly to raise it to the pinnacle. Prof. Al-Refai reviewed the University's most important achievements, as follows: In 2014, the University received the Order of Independence, First Class, for its outstanding performance in the field of higher education; in 2013, PSUT was awarded ABET accreditation for four specializations, and the King Talal School of Business Technology was admitted to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). 82% of PSUT's specializations ranked first in the subject level of the University Proficiency Exam, and the University took first place at the general level. Under an initiative of HRH Crown Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II, four students from the University were selected for training at the US space agency (NASA), in addition to two students who undertook training at top international company, Airbus. This year, a team of PSUT students ranked first among the Arab universities and fourth among the 4049 competing teams at the IEEEXtreme Competition. Furthermore, the University became champions of the MENA region in the ACM Programming Contest, and students from PSUT ranked third in the world in the Huawei Competition in China. Members of the University’s Debate Club won first place in the the Fifth International Arabic Language Debating Tournament organized by the State of Qatar. In addition, PSUT students took first place in the CFA Research Challenge Competition at the local level, and the team qualified to represent Jordan in the international competition in Switzerland.
Speaking on behalf of the participating companies, Mr. Haitham Al-Rawajbeh, a representative of the ICT sector at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, expressed his pride in this conference, which underlines a strong relationship and network formed between the academic sector, the industrial sector and the labor market. He called for the spread of this cooperation at all levels and in various fields, praising the outstanding quality of PSUT graduates, which is in line with the requirements and developments of the labor market.
A number of University graduates talked about their success stories, the investments they have made, and the international positions they have occupied. They also thanked HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, as well as the administration and instructors at the University for their generous efforts in refining the students’ skills and abilities during their years of study, leading to them becoming highly qualified and prominent in the labor market, as evidenced by the fact that 89% of PSUT graduates find employment within 6 months of graduating.
Prof. Al-Refai brought the ceremony to a close by honoring the event sponsors and participating companies.
On the sidelines of the conference, the President of the University inaugurated the 14th Careers Fair in the presence of a number of guests, the deans of the University’s Schools, and an audience of business owners and professionals. 63 companies from all sectors took part in the Fair, where PSUT graduates were offered training and employment opportunities. The Fair also housed a special booth to exhibit the 25 most outstanding graduation projects produced by students of the University.
