The President of Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai, participated in the annual meeting of the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED). Last year, Prof, Al-Refai was elected to the Union's Board of Directors as a member, representing Jordan. The Union includes 129 universities from 23 countries, most of which are situated on the Mediterranean basin.

The meeting was held at the Union’s headquarters in the Italian capital, Rome. On the sidelines of the meeting, a conference of the participating universities took place, during which Al-Refai participated in a seminar on "The Social Responsibility of Universities". He gave a roundup of PSUT’s experiences, and spoke of the institution’s awareness of the role that universities can play in contributing to community development, facing major challenges, and spreading the fundamental values of universities. The seminar focused on the four axes of immigration and intercultural dialogue, student participation in social, cultural and humanitarian activities outside the university, entrepreneurship and professional integration, and governance.

Notably, the Union seeks to enhance academic and research cooperation among member states, and works to set up EU-backed joint projects, especially those related to educational opportunities for refugees in the Middle East region. It also aims to facilitate the transfer and exchange of expertise, as well as the mobility of students and faculty members between member universities so as to ensure quality of education. UNIMED includes universities from France, Italy, Albania, Georgia, Finland, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, UAE, Qatar, and Yemen.
