PSUT organizes TEDx International Conference, 2018

Princess Sumaya University for Technology has held a TEDx International Conference with the aim of disseminating pioneering ideas in various academic and extracurricular arenas. The event was sponsored by Orange Jordan and organized by the University’s Deanship of Student Affairs and a number of students of Network and Information Security Engineering, led by Sara Al-Hiyari, who contacted TEDx in the United States,

Making the opening speech of the TEDx Conference on behalf of PSUT President Prof. Mashhoor Al-Refai, Prof. Arafat Awajan expressed his pleasure and pride in PSUT’s hosting of this conference and the presence of this distinguished constellation of stars who show promise of being role models for the next generation. He extended his wishes for the further success of these individuals who possess such positive energies.

Dr. Awajan also reviewed the achievements of PSUT and its students, focusing on recent accomplishments in the IEEEXtreme and ACM international programming competitions. PSUT took the gold medal in the ACM’s Arab Collegiate Programming Contest (ACPC), 2018. In the same competition, the University achieved first and second place against the other participating Jordanian universities, in addition to taking second place at the Arab regional level. Furthermore, PSUT ranked first in the Arab world for the fourth consecutive year and took fourth place at the global level at the annual IEEEXtreme competition, which is held by the international IEEE organization. The University triumphed over several participating international universities. The overall final rankings were, USA first, China second, Switzerland in third, and Jordan in fourth place.

Dr. Awajan also thanked the PSUT presidency and the Royal Scientific Society for providing the students with everything that was needed to make this event a success, and he praised the organizing students for their efforts. He also extended his sincere thanks to HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, for her leading role in recognizing and promoting the role of young people, and her untiring efforts to place Jordan firmly in the ranks of the technologically developed countries.

Dr. Rami Salem, Dean of Student Affairs at the University, acknowledged the excellent standard of the TEDx Conference, which was held at the PSUT campus. He noted that the conference included 13 speakers on subjects such as leadership, art, mental health, artificial intelligence, the promotion and empowerment of women, support for people with special needs, and other important topics. Dr. Salem explained that the selection of speakers was made by a special committee from the team of organizing students. The committee met with applicants over a period of months to ensure that all TEDx conditions were fulfilled by each speaker. He also said that these topics would be broadcast on the TEDx YouTube channel, which has a following of 15 million viewers.

Orange Jordan's CEO, Terry Marini, expressed his pleasure at the company's sponsorship of this important event, saying "Our sponsorship of the TEDx Conference stems from our belief in its importance to the development of the expertise and skills of young people. These events foster an exchange of experiences, creative ideas, and success stories of young people and a number of specialists in various fields.” Mr. Marini emphasized that Orange Jordan pays special attention to the support and development of young people, considering them as the backbone of the future and the driving force of the economy.

At the close of the conference, Dr. Rami Salem honored the speakers and the organizing team of students. He expressed his happiness and pride in these outstanding students for their excellent efforts in organizing such a successful international conference, which had achieved the desired objectives.

During the conference, students who took part in the various competitions received prizes of books, provided by the company ‘A Thousand Books’.

TEDx emerges from a world of ideas worthy of dissemination, a locally-organized event that brings people together and draws upon the global TEDx experience. The TEDx program consists of two main parts, namely, the speakers, followed by a presentation of one of TED's global videos. TEDx International provides the key working guidelines for anyone who wishes to organize a TEDx event.
